The Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship for Research Students allows Indian graduates to pursue master’s or doctoral studies at Japanese universities. The Embassy of Japan in India administers this scholarship for the 2027 academic intake. Successful candidates enroll as non-regular research students before transitioning to full degree programs.

Scholarship benefits
Preparatory students: ┬е143,000/mo ( тВ╣83,100 per month)
Master’s / professional: ┬е144,000/mo (тВ╣84,700 per month)
Doctoral students : ┬е145,000/mo (тВ╣85,300 per month)
Tuition fees: Fully waived. No education costs
Travel: Round-trip airfare. India тЖФ Japan covered
Scholarship duration
- Non-regular research students: scholarship runs from April, September, or October 2027 through end of March 2029
- Regular master’s or doctoral students: the scholarship covers the full standard period required to complete the enrolled course

Eligibility criteria
- Age below 35 years тАФ born on or after 2 April 1992
- Master’s applicants: bachelor’s degree in the relevant field with at least 70% marks (65% for humanities and social sciences)
- PhD applicants (second phase): master’s degree with at least 70% marks, plus practical research, teaching, or work experience
- Degrees and mark sheets must be obtained on or before 30 September 2027 for the October 2027 batch

- Download the Preliminary Application Form from the Embassy website
- Complete the form and email it as an attachment to┬аscholarship-india@nd.mofa.go.jp
- Submit only in Microsoft Word format (.docx) тАФ file size must not exceed 1 MB
- Do not attach any supporting documents at this stage
- Shortlisted candidates will later receive a separate, full application form with document requirement

Important notes
The Embassy accepts applications exclusively at the designated email address. Applications arriving after 11:59 p.m. on 15 May 2026 face automatic rejection тАФ so submit well before the deadline.
Past examination question papers are publicly available at studyinjapan.go.jp тАФ candidates should use these to prepare for the written test.
